90% OF OUR FOOD’S GENETIC DIVERSITY HAS DISAPPEARED
A perfect storm has been brewing in the way we grow food. A combination of genetic erosion, cultural elimination, and a rampant increase in intellectual property has set the stage for a broken food system:
a system in which seed is owned and controlled by a handful of multinationals
a system that erases the history and culture of seed, and continues to extract and appropriate seed from their keepers for profit
a system in which, due to a staggering loss of genetic diversity, seeds can no longer adapt to the acceleration of a changing climate.
This is happening now.
In the past 100 years, over 90% of the genetic diversity of our food has disappeared. And approximately three-quarters of the global seed supply is controlled by three multinational chemical companies.
We can do better. We must do better.
